Over a decade ago, NEOM was introduced as a cornerstone of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's "2030 Vision," with the objective of fostering economic diversification and diminishing reliance on oil. In April, Yasser Rumayyan, the head of the Public Investment Fund, which owns NEOM, confirmed that The Line is no longer a priority, while refuting any cancellations of projects. However, sources indicate that the construction of the NEOM sports stadium has been indefinitely postponed.

In pursuit of hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup, Saudi Arabia is currently developing 15 venues, a move that is part of its ambitious "2030 Vision" initiative, which has seen the country's wealth fund, PIF, make significant investments in the sports sector. This tournament, marking the first time a single nation will manage an expanded 48-team event, has been met with considerable financial backing. According to data shared with Reuters by the Dubai-based construction industry intelligence platform MEED Projects, the total cost of these projects is estimated at $227 billion. Among these, the NEOM Stadium is expected to cost $2.5 billion, although it has been designated as "on hold." The completion date for this facility, designed to accommodate 46,000 spectators, is not specified. The remainder of the venues are at various stages of development, with completion anticipated between 2026 and 2033.
